Abstract

The development of satellite communication systems requires the use of passive components that possess high performance, compact size, and high efficiency within certain frequency ranges. One of the critical components in the front-end of satellite communication systems is the bandpass filter, which functions to filter signals at the desired operating frequency and suppress interference outside the operating band. This study discusses the design and analysis of two types of microstrip filters, namely the hairpin filter and the coupled line filter, which are optimized for satellite communication applications in the S-band (3.5–4.5 GHz). The design process is carried out using Qucs Studio software (open source), with the main parameters analyzed including return loss, insertion loss, and effective bandwidth. The simulation results indicate that both types of filters are capable of performing well at the target frequency, with differences in characteristics regarding loss factor and selectivity. The hairpin filter exhibits more compact dimensions with relatively low insertion loss, whereas the coupled line filter provides a wider bandwidth and a sharper transition response. This performance comparison serves as a basis for selecting the most suitable filter topology for satellite communication systems in the medium frequency band, such as the S-band.
