Abstract

This study, titled “Tensile Test Analysis on Riveted and Sheet Joints of Copper, Brass, and Stainless Steel Materials with Quenching Treatment as an Alternative to Aluminum Alloy 7075-T6 for C-130 Hercules Aircraft Skin,” aims to analyze the mechanical properties namely tensile strength, elongation, and elastic modulus of alternative materials (copper, brass, and stainless steel) after quenching, in order to evaluate their feasibility as substitutes for the commonly used aluminum alloy 7075-T6. The research employs a quantitative experimental method, utilizing a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) in accordance with ASTM A370 standards, with specimens configured in two rivet joint patterns (zig-zag and inline) and subjected to water-quenching heat treatment. The findings reveal that each material exhibits distinct mechanical characteristics after quenching, with stainless steel achieving the highest tensile strength, followed by brass and copper, while aluminum alloy 7075-T6 remains superior in strength-to-weight ratio. Quenching treatment significantly enhances the mechanical properties of brass and stainless steel in particular. Overall, the study concludes that implementing alternative materials with quenching treatment shows potential as an initial step toward diversifying aircraft structural materials, especially in relation to maintenance needs and material availability within the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) maintenance environment.
